The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily loved running through the golden fields behind her house. Every afternoon after school, she'd race the wind all the way to the secret place she'd discovered—a sparkling blue pool hidden by weeping willow trees.
One sunny Tuesday, Lily arrived at the pool to find someone new sitting there. It was a sphinx, with the body of a lion and the face of a wise woman with golden feathers around her neck. Lily gasped but didn't run away.
"Hello, little one," the sphinx said in a voice like gentle bells. "I've been waiting for someone kind enough to see me."
"You're real!" Lily whispered.
"As real as friendship," the sphinx nodded. "My name is Cleo. I guard this magical pool, but I need help. A poor bull named Barnaby is lost in the Whispering Woods. He's gentle and frightened, and tomorrow is the Great Star Festival where he's supposed to carry the moon's first light across the sky."
Lily's eyes widened. "I can help!"
"Thank you," Cleo said. "But you must be brave. Barnaby is huge—taller than trees!—and he's scared of everything."
Running side by side, they raced toward the dark woods. The trees whispered secrets as they passed. Soon, they found Barnaby, a magnificent white bull with golden horns, trembling beside a stream.
"Please don't be scared," Lily said softly. Barnaby lifted his massive head, eyes full of tears.
"I'm too clumsy," the bull mooed sadly. "I'll trip and ruin the festival."
Cleo smiled. "Barnaby, the stars chose you because your heart is big enough to carry light. Not because you're perfect."
Lily took a step closer. "Everyone gets scared. Even me! But we can be scared and brave at the same time."
The bull thought for a moment. Then he lowered his head so Lily could pet his velvet nose. "Will you... would you come with me?"
"Of course!" Lily beamed.
That night, under a sky full of twinkling stars, Barnaby walked carefully through the festival, carrying a glowing lantern that held the moon's first light. Children cheered, and Lily walked beside him, her hand on his shoulder. The bull didn't trip once.
Before dawn, Cleo appeared beside them. "You see?" she whispered. "The bravest thing isn't never being scared. It's doing what matters, even when you ARE scared."
Lily hugged Barnaby's huge neck. "We make a pretty good team."
And every day after that, Lily kept running to the pool, where Cleo, Barnaby, and she would have magical adventures together—because that's what friends do.
