The Sphinx's Secret Pool

Lily pressed her nose against the dusty attic window, watching the orange sunset paint the sky. She was supposed to be cleaning, but her detective kit sat open beside her — magnifying glass, notebook, and flashlight. She was the best spy in the whole neighborhood.

That's when she saw it. Behind the old oak tree, something shimmered like liquid gold.

Lily grabbed her flashlight and tiptoed downstairs, past her sleeping dog Max. The backyard was quiet except for crickets singing their evening song. She pushed through the overgrown bushes and gasped.

A crystal-clear pool glowed in the moonlight, and beside it sat a creature she'd only seen in books — a sphinx! But not a scary one. This sphinx had soft golden fur, bright hazel eyes, and wings folded gently against her sides.

"I was wondering when my favorite little spy would find me," the sphinx said. "I've been waiting eighty years."

Lily's eyes went wide. "You talk?"

"Of course I talk. I'm the Guardian of Secrets." The sphinx's tail swished gracefully. "And you, Lily, have something special — curiosity. That's the first magic."

The sphinx pushed an orange across the pool. It floated like a magic boat. "Every night, the Moon Pool shows one truth to those brave enough to look. What do you most want to know?"

Lily thought hard. She wanted to know lots of things — where missing socks went, why her brother was so annoying, what her cat dreamed about. But then she remembered how lonely she felt sometimes, being the only one who loved mysteries and adventures.

"I want to know if there are other kids like me," she whispered.

The sphinx smiled mysteriously and touched the water with her wing. Ripples spread outward, turning into silver pictures. Lily saw herself in a library, surrounded by kids who loved detective stories just like she did. She saw them solving puzzles together, laughing, sharing adventures.

"The world is full of magic," the sphinx said softly, "but friendship is the greatest magic of all. Tomorrow, go to the library at 3:00. You'll find what you're looking for."

Lily woke up in her bed, orange light streaming through her window. Had it all been a dream? Then she noticed it — a single golden sphinx feather on her pillow.

That afternoon at the library, Lily found three kids huddled around a mystery book. They looked up and smiled.

"Want to help us solve this?" a boy asked.

Lily grinned and sat down. Some secrets are meant to be shared.
