The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Leo and Mia were playing baseball in the park on the hottest day of summer. Leo wiped sweat from his forehead and adjusted his favorite blue baseball hat. It was lucky — he'd caught every ball while wearing it.
"Race you to the old pool!" Mia shouted, pointing to the forbidden pool behind the twisted oak tree. Nobody ever went there. The water was always still and strange.
Leo ran so fast his hat flew off and landed right in the middle of the pool.
"Oh no!" Leo cried. The hat floated on the water like a tiny blue boat. "That's my lucky hat!"
As they reached the pool's edge, the water began to shimmer. Ripples spread across the surface, even though there was no wind. Suddenly, the water rose up, sparkling like diamonds, forming the shape of a magnificent sphinx — a creature with the body of a lion and the head of a wise person.
"Children who seek what they have lost," the sphinx spoke in a voice like gentle waves, "answer my riddle, and your prize shall be returned. Fail, and your hat becomes part of my collection forever."
Leo and Mia held hands. "We're ready!"
"What shines brighter than gold but has no price? What grows stronger when shared but disappears when kept? What can travel anywhere without moving?" the sphinx asked, golden eyes twinkling.
Leo thought about his baseball team. Mia thought about her family.
"Friendship!" they shouted together.
The sphinx smiled, and the water swirled gently, pushing Leo's hat right to their feet. "Wise children. Remember this: some treasures are measured in friends, not in things."
The sphinx dissolved back into the pool, which became still once more. Leo put on his lucky hat, but now he knew friendship was the real treasure. They ran back to their baseball game, no longer caring who won — because they had each other, and that was better than any lucky hat could ever be.
