The Sphinx's Secret Pool

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's garden, but today she discovered something magical. Behind a wall of ivy, she found a sparkling blue pool guarded by a tiny sphinx no bigger than a cat.

"Greetings, young adventurer," the sphinx purred, stretching golden wings. "I am Cleo, keeper of the Wishing Pool. But first, you must solve my riddle."

Lily's favorite hat — a purple one with rainbow stripes — slipped off her head as she nodded eagerly. She'd been practicing riddles with her dad every night.

Celo's emerald eyes twinkled. "What grows in a garden, makes you strong like a hero, but tastes yucky to most children?"

"Spinach!" Lily laughed. "But I actually like it — especially with cheese!"

The sphinx clapped her paws. "Correct! You may make one wish."

Lily thought hard. She could wish for toys or candy, but something else tugged at her heart. She remembered the old telephone cable behind her school that had broken during the storm. The kids couldn't call their parents anymore.

"I wish the cable was fixed so everyone can talk to their families," she said.

The pool bubbled and sparkled. Golden light swirled around like glitter, and suddenly Cleo grew until she was lion-sized.

"A selfless wish," the sphinx said warmly. "You have a brave and kind heart."

She touched her paw to the water, and ripples of magic spread outward. "Your wish is granted. And because you chose to help others, you'll always find your way back to this magical place."

Lily put her rainbow hat back on and waved goodbye. The next day at school, she saw the cable was fixed. Children were happily calling their parents during lunch. Lily smiled, touching the pocket where she'd found a small golden sphinx figurine — a reminder that kindness is the greatest magic of all.

And sometimes, when she visited her grandmother's garden, she'd leave a little spinach near the ivy wall, just in case Cleo was hungry for a friend's snack.
