The Sphinx's Secret Pool

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's backyard, especially on hot summer days. The old house held many secrets, but the best one was hidden behind the towering palm tree at the far end of the garden.

One afternoon, while chasing a butterfly, Lily noticed something glimmering near the palm's roots. She pushed aside the fronds and gasped. There, bubbling up from the ground, was a tiny crystal pool no bigger than her lunchbox.

"Who disturbs my rest?" a voice rumbled.

Lily jumped. From behind the palm tree stepped a creature she'd only seen in books—a golden sphinx with emerald eyes and wings that shimmered like rainbows.

"I'm Lily," she whispered, reaching for her iPhone to take a picture. The sphinx chuckled.

"That glowing box cannot capture my magic, little one. But perhaps you can help me." The sphinx pawed at the ground nervously. "My friend, a gentle bull named Taurus who lives in the stars, has fallen from the sky. I cannot carry him back alone."

Lily's eyes widened. "A star bull? Here?"

"By the old oak tree," the sphinx nodded. "He is frightened and heavy as a boulder. Will you help?"

Lily didn't hesitate. She followed the sphinx through the garden, past the roses and the vegetable patch, until she found him—a magnificent bull with constellation patterns glowing on his fur, looking sadly at the sky.

"Don't worry, Taurus," Lily said gently. She stroked his golden nose, and he nuzzled her hand. "We'll get you home."

But how? Even with the sphinx's strength, Taurus was too heavy to lift. Lily looked around and spotted the crystal pool. The sphinx had said it couldn't be photographed, but what if...

"The pool!" Lily exclaimed. "It shows reflections—what if it can show us the way home?"

She led Taurus and the sphinx back to the palm tree. All three peered into the water. Instead of their reflections, they saw a map of stars twinkling in the pool's depths—a constellation map pointing straight up.

"The pool is a window to the sky!" the sphinx realized. "Taurus, look—your path home!"

Taurus stepped into the magical pool. Instead of splashing, he began to glow, rising slowly upward like a golden bubble, his constellation patterns burning bright. Higher and higher he floated until—POOF!—he became a new star in the night sky.

"Thank you," the sphinx said, pressing something into Lily's hand. It was a golden coin with a bull on one side and a sphinx on the other. "Whenever you need help, hold this beneath the palm tree, and I will come."

Lily smiled, tucking the coin into her pocket. Some adventures couldn't be captured on any iPhone, and that made them even more special.
