The Sphinx's Secret Pool

Lily loved visiting her grandmother's old house, especially the dusty attic filled with mysterious treasures. On this hot summer day, while exploring behind stacks of old books, she discovered something peculiar—a small golden statue of a sphinx, no bigger than her hand, with emerald eyes that seemed to sparkle.

The sphinx statue was warm when Lily picked it up, and suddenly it spoke in a whispery voice like rustling leaves. 'Young one, I've been waiting for someone with imagination as big as yours.' Lily jumped but didn't let go. The sphinx explained it was a guardian of magical places, and it needed her help to find its lost pool—the Pool of Wishes, hidden somewhere in the garden.

'But how will we find it?' Lily asked, her heart racing with excitement. The sphinx told her she needed three special gifts: something bright like the sun, something that holds knowledge, and something that captures memories.

Lily rushed to the kitchen and grabbed a shiny orange from the fruit bowl—its color matched the sphinx's golden glow perfectly. Then she found her mother's old iPhone that she sometimes used to play games. The sphinx nodded approvingly. 'The orange represents brightness and joy. The phone holds knowledge and memories in its pictures.'

Together they searched the garden, following the sphinx's instructions. Behind the rosebushes, beneath an ancient oak tree, they found it—a small crystal-clear pool no bigger than a bathtub, yet somehow deeper than the ocean. Its water shimmered with rainbow colors.

'This is it!' the sphinx exclaimed. 'Now make your wish, but remember—the best wishes are ones that help others.'

Lily thought carefully. She didn't wish for toys or candy. Instead, she wished that her grandmother, who had trouble walking, could dance again like she used to in her youth.

The pool glowed golden, and ripples spread outward carrying her wish into the world. The sphinx smiled, and Lily felt warm all over. That evening, to everyone's surprise, Grandmother stood up from her chair and twirled around the living room, laughing with joy.

The sphinx statue returned to the attic, waiting for the next child with a big heart. Lily learned that magic exists for those who believe, and that the greatest wishes are the ones we make for others.
