The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily loved exploring her grandmother's garden, especially on hot summer days. Behind the old oak tree stood a stone statue she'd never noticed before—a sphinx with emerald eyes that seemed to wink in the sunlight.
One afternoon, as orange clouds gathered overhead, Lily heard thunder rumble. CRACK! Lightning flashed, and suddenly the sphinx's stone paw moved.
"You're late for tea," the sphinx said in a voice like chimes. Lily gasped.
"Who are you?" she whispered.
"I'm Cleo, guardian of the magic pool. Come see!" The sphinx padded toward a hidden pond Lily had never seen. The water sparkled like liquid diamonds.
"Touch the water," Cleo said. When Lily did, ripples turned into butterflies. Lightning flashed again, but instead of rain, little stars fell from the sky.
Cleo offered Lily a perfect orange from the garden. "Friends share," she said simply. They sat by the magical pool as sunset painted the sky purple and gold, eating orange segments and watching the stars dance.
"You'll come back tomorrow?" Cleo asked as the first real raindrop fell.
"Every day," Lily promised, hugging her new friend's stone paw.
The lightning storm passed, leaving puddles that glowed with magic. Lily ran home, knowing she'd found something wonderful: a friend who made every day an adventure.
And in the garden, the sphinx smiled, emerald eyes twinkling like the stars they'd watched together.
