The Sphinx's Secret Pool

Lily lived in a house with a big backyard. In the corner stood an ancient stone statue of a sphinx, half-lion and half-human, with wise eyes that seemed to sparkle when the moon was full. Beside it grew a tall palm tree that swished in the breeze like it was whispering secrets.

One hot summer afternoon, Lily's cat Mittens vanished. Lily searched everywhere—under the porch, behind the garden shed, even up in the palm tree's branches. Finally, she noticed something strange. The sphinx statue's stone paw was pointing toward a cluster of bushes she'd never explored before.

Lily pushed through the leaves and gasped. There, hidden from view, was a crystal-clear pool that shimmered with colors like a rainbow. And sitting beside it was not just Mittens, but also the neighbor's enormous bull, Barnaby! Normally Barnaby would chase anything that moved, but now he sat calmly while Mittens rubbed her head against his giant nose.

"You found it," said a voice. Lily jumped. The sphinx statue had come to life! Its stone skin now looked like soft golden fur.

"Found what?" Lily asked, her eyes wide.

"The Friendship Pool," the sphinx explained. "Once a month, when the moon is right, any creature who drinks from this water becomes friends with everyone else who has drunk from it. Barnaby and Mittens met here last night."

Lily knelt by the water. "Can I drink too?"

"Only if you promise never to judge others by how they look or what you've heard about them," the sphinx said gently. "A cat and a bull became friends here. Can you be as brave as they are?"

Lily thought about how she'd never talked to the new girl at school because everyone said she was weird. She dipped her hand in the cool water and drank.

The next day at school, Lily walked right up to the new girl, whose name was Aisha, and said hello. They discovered they both loved drawing and adventure stories. By recess, they were best friends.

Sometimes, when the moon was full, Lily would visit the sphinx and his magical pool. She learned that the best friendships come from the most unexpected places—and that being brave enough to say hello can change your whole world.
