The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily loved exploring her grandmother's garden, especially on stormy summer afternoons. Today, dark clouds gathered overhead as she skipped past the rose bushes toward the old stone fountain at the garden's edge.
What she found made her gasp. Instead of the usual dry fountain basin, a shimmering pool of water had appeared, glowing with an inner light. And curled up beside it was a creature from her storybooks—a golden sphinx with the body of a lion and the head of a wise woman.
"Hello, young adventurer," the sphinx purred, her eyes sparkling like stars. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to visit my magical pool. But only those who answer my riddle may see its wonders."
Lily's heart raced, but she stood tall. "I'm ready!"
The sphinx smiled. "What appears for a moment, brightens the whole sky, but disappears before you can count to five?"
Lily thought hard. Then a flash of white light cracked across the darkened sky, followed by a soft rumble.
"Lightning!" Lily cried out. "That's the answer!"
"Correct!" The sphinx dipped her paw into the glowing pool, and suddenly Lily could see amazing images in the water—castles in the clouds, forests made of candy, children flying on paper airplanes.
"This pool shows dreams," the sphinx explained. "But it only appears during storms, when lightning reminds us that magic is real. The bravest adventurers find the most wonderful things."
Lily reached out and touched the water, and for just a moment, she saw herself riding a dragon through rainbow clouds.
"Thank you!" she called as the sphinx began to fade like mist.
"Remember," the sphinx's voice whispered as the first raindrops fell, "courage comes in many forms. Sometimes it's facing a storm. Sometimes it's answering a riddle. And sometimes it's simply believing in magic."
Lily ran home through the warm summer rain, already planning her next adventure. She knew that somewhere, the sphinx was waiting, and that the next storm would bring another magical mystery to solve.
