The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Leo hated spinach. Every time his mom put those green leaves on his plate, he made a terrible face. But today was different. Today, while playing in his backyard, Leo spotted something strange near the old garden pool.
The pool hadn't been used in years. Green moss covered its edges, and wildflowers grew through the cracks in the concrete. But today, something sparkled in the sunlight at the bottom.
Leo crept closer. There, perched on a mossy rock, sat the tiniest creature he had ever seen. It had the body of a cat and the head of a human, with tiny wings tucked against its back.
A sphinx!
"Greetings, young Leo," the sphinx said in a voice like chimes in the wind. "I am Cleo, guardian of the Wishing Pool. I've been waiting for someone brave enough to find me."
Leo's eyes went wide. "A Wishing Pool? Like, wishes come true?"
"Indeed," Cleo said, her whiskers twitching. "But first, you must solve my riddle. Only then may you make a wish."
Leo nodded eagerly. He loved riddles!
Cleo cleared her tiny throat. "I am green and leafy, hated by many, loved by few. But in me lies the secret to being strong and true. What am I?"
Leo's face fell. He knew that answer all too well. "Spinach," he whispered.
Cleo's eyes shone like stars. "Correct! Now you understand why this pool chose you. For the strongest magic comes from things we think we hate."
She gestured to the water. The pool's surface shimmered like liquid rainbow. "Make your wish, Leo."
Leo thought hard. He could wish for anything – endless toys, superpowers, never having to eat vegetables again. But then he remembered how sad his mom looked when he refused to eat his dinner. How she tried so hard to keep him healthy.
"I wish," Leo said, "to understand why spinach is special. And to help other kids see the magic in healthy food too."
The pool erupted in sparkles. Suddenly, Leo felt warm inside, like he'd swallowed sunshine.
Cleo smiled. "A wise wish. You've learned that courage means trying new things, and real strength comes from what's good for you."
She placed a tiny paw on his hand. "Come back anytime, Leo. The Wishing Pool is yours now too."
That night, Leo ate all his spinach. It tasted different somehow – like adventure and magic and friendship. And somewhere in his garden, a tiny sphinx purred, watching over her new friend.
