The Sphinx's Secret Pool
Lily loved exploring her grandmother's dusty attic. One rainy afternoon, she found something extraordinary—a golden door handle hidden behind old coats. When she turned it, the door creaked open to reveal a magical garden.
In the center sparkled a crystal pool, its water shimmering like liquid diamonds. But the most amazing thing was what sat beside it: a tiny sphinx, no bigger than a kitten, with emerald eyes and wings like a hummingbird.
"Greetings, young explorer," the sphinx said in a voice like chiming bells. "I am Cleopatra. Will you be my friend?"
Lily's eyes widened. "A talking sphinx! Yes, I'll be your friend!"
Cleopatra fluttered her wings. "Wonderful! But first, you must solve my riddle. This pool shows reflections of true friendship. Look into it and tell me what you see."
Lily peered into the water. At first, she saw her own reflection. Then the water began to swirl with colors. She saw herself sharing her toys with her cousin who had none. She watched herself holding her crying friend's hand when he fell off his bike. She saw herself reading bedtime stories to her little sister even when she was tired.
"I see..." Lily whispered, "times when I was kind to others. Even when it wasn't easy."
Cleopatra's emerald eyes sparkled. "Correct! True friendship isn't about playing together every day. It's about being there when someone needs you, sharing what you have, and kindness that comes from your heart."
The sphinx touched Lily's nose with her tiny paw. "You have a good heart, Lily. Whenever you need wisdom, just whisper my name near any water. I'll be there."
Lily hugged her new friend gently. "Will I see you again?"
"Always," Cleopatra promised. "True friends are never far apart."
When Lily returned through the golden door, the attic looked just the same. But in her pocket, she found a tiny emerald stone that glowed warm against her palm. And whenever she looked at water, she could almost see a tiny winged sphinx winking back at her, reminding her that the best magic of all is kindness shared between friends.
