The Sphinx's Secret Orange

Lila loved exploring her grandmother's dusty attic. Rain drummed on the roof as she opened an old wooden chest. Inside lay a glowing orange crystal, warm as sunlight. Lila held it in her small palm, marveling at how it pulsed like a tiny heartbeat.

Suddenly, the crystal whispered her name.

"I've been waiting for you, Lila."

Before her eyes, the orange crystal transformed into a miniature sphinx no bigger than a teacup. It had golden wings and eyes that sparkled like stars.

"I am Cleo," the sphinx said. "For five hundred years, I slept inside that orange crystal. Only someone with a pure heart and brave spirit could wake me."

Lila's eyes widened. "Are you real?"

"As real as friendship," Cleo replied. "I need your help. My sister sphinxes are trapped in the Desert of Forgotten Dreams. We were separated long ago when a jealous sorcerer turned us into crystals and scattered us across the world."

"How can I help?" Lila asked.

Cleo flew to Lila's open palm and rested there. "Hold me, and believe. Together, we can find the others. But you must solve three riddles first."

Lila nodded bravely. "I'm ready."

"I have cities but no houses, mountains but no trees, water but no fish. What am I?" Cleo asked.

Lila thought hard. Then she smiled. "A map!"

Cleo's wings shimmered. "Correct! Now the second: I can fly without wings, cry without eyes, and run without legs. What am I?"

"A cloud!" Lila exclaimed.

"Wonderful," Cleo said. "Last one: The more you take, the more you leave behind. What am I?"

Lila scrunched her nose, thinking. Then she grinned. "Footsteps!"

Cleo grew larger until she became lion-sized. "You did it, Lila! Your kindness and cleverness have broken the curse. Now, climb on my back. We have friends to find."

Lila climbed onto Cleo's golden back. Together they soared through the attic ceiling, up into the starry night, racing toward the desert where other orange crystals glowed, waiting for brave souls to wake them.

Lila pressed her palm against Cleo's soft fur, feeling grateful for the most magical adventure of all.
