The Sphinx's Secret Gift
Lila loved exploring her grandmother's garden, especially on warm summer evenings when the fireflies danced like tiny stars. One night, as she reached for a ripe papaya from the old tree, something magical happened.
A flash of lightning split the sky, though there wasn't a cloud in sight. The bolt struck the garden's stone statue — a small sphinx that had stood for as long as anyone could remember.
To Lila's wonder, the sphinx began to move! Its stone wings stretched, and its emerald eyes blinked open.
"Greetings, young one," the sphinx rumbled gently. "I am Cleo, guardian of the garden's magic. The lightning has awakened me for one hour only."
Lila's eyes widened. "You're real!"
"I am," Cleo nodded. "And I sense you have a kind heart. Would you like to see something magical?"
Lila nodded eagerly. Cleo breathed on the papaya in Lila's hands, and suddenly it began to glow golden.
"This is no ordinary fruit," Cleo explained. "When shared with love, it grants a special wish. But remember — magic works best when used for others, not just yourself."
Lila thought of her little brother Leo, who had been sad since losing his favorite toy. She knew what to do.
"Thank you, Cleo!" Lila hugged the sphinx's stone paw. "I'll share this papaya with Leo."
As another flash of lightning filled the sky, Cleo began to turn back into stone. "You've learned the most important lesson, dear one. Kindness is the greatest magic of all."
Lila ran inside and split the glowing papaya with Leo. As they ate, Leo's eyes sparkled with joy, and somehow they just knew — his lost toy would be found. The next morning, it turned up exactly where he'd left it weeks ago.
From that day on, whenever Lila saw the stone sphinx, she winked. And sometimes, just sometimes, the sphinx winked back.
