The Sphinx's Secret Gift

Lily was braiding her wild brown hair under the old oak tree when she heard it. A soft purring sound, like a cat but deeper. She peeked around the trunk and gasped.

There sat a creature with the body of a lion and the head of a wise old woman. A sphinx! But not like the ones in books—this one was tiny, no bigger than her cat, with shimmering golden wings that sparkled like morning dew.

"Hello, little one," the sphinx said, blinking her large amber eyes. "I'm Cleo. Would you like to see something magical?"

Lily nodded so hard her hair fell out of its braid.

Celo fluttered her wings and they soared into the sky, past Lily's bedroom window where her iPhone sat charging on her nightstand. Below them, the backyard pond twinkled like sapphires.

"My friend Finnick lives there," Cleo said, pointing with her paw. "He's a goldfish who forgot he was magic."

They landed softly beside the pond. A beautiful orange fish swam to the surface, his scales glimmering with rainbow colors.

"I remember now," Finnick bubbled. "I wished for a friend, and the stars sent me you!"

Celo reached into her fur and pulled out the strangest fruit Lily had ever seen—a papaya the color of sunset. "This is a wishing fruit," she explained. "One bite makes dreams come true, but only if you share it."

Lily carefully broke the papaya into three pieces. The juice tasted sweet and warm, like sunshine and friendship all mixed together.

Suddenly, Finnick grew magnificent wings and flew up to join them. Cleo's golden glow spread until all three friends shone like stars.

"Every friendship is magic," Cleo whispered. "You just needed to share something sweet to see it."

That night, Lily reached for her iPhone to take a picture of her friends, but they had faded into moonlight—leaving only three papaya seeds on her pillow. She planted them in the garden, knowing that some magic grows slowly, and the best adventures are the ones you share.
