The Sphinx's Secret Gift
Lily had no friends. Every day at recess, she sat alone under the oak tree, watching other children play tag and share secrets. She wished she had someone to laugh with, someone who understood her.
One afternoon, while exploring her grandmother's dusty attic, Lily discovered something extraordinary. Behind a stack of old books sat a tiny sphinx no bigger than a kitten, with emerald-green wings and golden fur.
"Hello," Lily whispered, hardly believing her eyes.
The sphinx stretched and yawned. "I've been waiting for someone like you. My name is Zephyr, and I've been asleep for one hundred years."
"Why were you asleep?"
Zephyr's whiskers twitched sadly. "I had no one to talk to. A sphinx needs friendship as much as a growing child needs sunshine. Without it, we fade away."
Lily's heart swelled with understanding. "I know how that feels."
"But you're here now," Zephyr said, brightening. "And I have something special for you." The little sphinx flew to a velvet box and opened it. Inside lay a single glowing orange pill.
"This is the Friendship Vitamin," Zephyr explained. "One sip, and you'll see the potential for friendship in everyone you meet. But remember, the vitamin only opens your eyes. You must still be brave enough to say hello."
Lily took the vitamin. It tasted like sunshine and strawberries. Suddenly, the world looked different. The playground wasn't just a place of exclusion anymore—it was full of children who might be waiting for someone to reach out.
The next day, Lily saw a girl sitting alone, reading a book about dragons. Lily's heart pounded, but she remembered Zephyr's words about being brave.
"I like dragons too," Lily said.
The girl looked up, and her smile was like sunshine breaking through clouds. "I'm Maya. Want to read together?"
That afternoon, Lily rushed home to tell Zephyr everything. The sphinx purred with happiness, his emerald wings shimmering.
"See?" Zephyr said. "The vitamin didn't make you friends. Being brave and kind did. The real magic was inside you all along."
Lily hugged her new friend. "And now you'll never be lonely again, because you have me."
Some days Lily still felt shy, but she knew the secret: friendship wasn't something you found—it was something you created, one hello at a time. And in her room, hidden in a velvet box, the Friendship Vitamin remained—just in case someone else needed help finding their own magic.
