The Sphinx's Secret Garden

Lily's golden retriever, Barnaby, had the wiggliest nose in the world. And it was always wiggling toward the old stone statue at the edge of their garden—the one her grandma called "the sphinx." Barnaby would bark at it, tail thumping, as if trying to tell Lily a secret.

One Tuesday, while gathering spinach for dinner, Lily noticed something strange. The sphinx's stone eyes seemed to sparkle in the sunlight. She set down her spinach basket and crept closer. Barnaby bounced beside her, fur golden as the summer sun.

"Who wakes me from my hundred-year nap?" a riddle echoed. The sphinx's stone mouth moved! Lily gasped as the ancient creature stretched, stone crumbling like dry cookies.

"I'm Lily! And this is Barnaby!" she chirped. The sphinx peered down, stone eyebrows knitting together.

"Ah, a child and her faithful companion. Tell me—what has leaves as green as emeralds, makes you strong as ten bears, and grows from tiny seeds?" The sphinx's riddle echoed across the garden.

Lily's eyes widened. She knew! She scooped up a handful of dark green leaves from her basket. "Spinach!"

The sphinx beamed, and suddenly the garden transformed. Stone flowers bloomed in rainbow colors. Butterflies made of stained glass fluttered around them.

"Correct!" the sphinx boomed. "You've shown that even simple things hold magic. Wisdom isn't always about knowing big answers—it's about seeing the wonder in small things."

Barnaby barked happily, chasing a glass butterfly. The sphinx chuckled, a sound like wind chimes.

"Come visit anytime, young friend. Bring your spinach, your curiosity, and your wonderful dog." The sphinx winked, then settled back into stone—still and peaceful once more.

That night, Lily's spinach soup tasted extra magical. And every day after, she and Barnaby would visit the sphinx, learning that the best adventures are the ones you find in your own backyard, especially when you look with an open heart.
