The Sphinx's Secret Garden
Lily discovered the rusty cable behind her grandmother's attic while searching for her lost kite. It dangled through a hole in the floorboards, shimmering with an otherworldly glow. Being the bravest ten-year-old in Maplewood, she grabbed hold and slid down into the most magical place she'd ever seen.
An enormous sphinx with emerald-green fur and golden hair that flowed like a waterfall sat atop a marble pedestal. The sphinx's eyes twinkled like stars.
"Welcome, little one," the sphinx rumbled softly. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to find my secret garden."
Lily's eyes widened as she looked around. Everything was glowing—flowers that hummed lullabies, trees that grew candy apples, and a vegetable patch where the spinach plants were dancing the cha-cha.
"That's funny," Lily giggled. "Spinach can't dance!"
"Magic spinach can," the sphinx winked. "But you must solve my riddle first. What has roots as nobody sees, is taller than trees, up, up it goes, and yet never grows?"
Lily thought hard. She looked at the cable she'd slid down on, then at the sphinx's knowing smile.
"A mountain!" Lily shouted.
"Correct!" The sphinx clapped her paws together joyfully. "Your prize awaits." She nudged a dancing spinach plant toward Lily.
Lily had always hated spinach. But this spinach sparkled like tiny diamonds. She took a tiny bite—and suddenly she could hear the flowers singing! She could understand what the squirrels were chattering about! The garden had opened its secrets to her.
"The magic was inside you all along," the sphinx whispered. "Sometimes we just need to be brave enough to try new things."
Lily hugged the sphinx goodbye and climbed back up the cable, her pockets full of magical spinach seeds. That night, for the first time ever, she ate every single spinach leaf on her dinner plate—and she could have sworn she heard her broccoli humming a tune.
Some adventures change you forever. And sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is try something you thought you'd never like.
