The Sphinx's Secret Garden
Lily loved baseball more than anything. Every afternoon, she'd grab her glove and run to the park, dreaming of hitting the perfect home run. But lately, her batting had been terrible.
"You're just tired," her mom said, handing her a bright orange fruit. "Try this papaya. It's full of vitamins that will give you energy."
Lily made a face but took a bite. Suddenly, she felt a warm tingle in her fingers. Without thinking, she grabbed her baseball and threw it. WHOOSH! It sailed farther than ever before.
That evening, as the sun set, Lily followed a trail of glowing fireflies behind the old library. There, in a hidden garden, stood the most magnificent creature she'd ever seen—a stone sphinx with golden wings!
"You found my secret garden," the sphinx spoke in a voice like chimes. "And you tasted my magical papaya."
"Your papaya?" Lily gasped.
"I grow special fruits that give children vitamins for their dreams," the sphinx explained. "The papaya helps baseball players throw farther and run faster. But you must use it kindly."
Lily nodded solemnly. "I promise."
The next day at practice, Lily hit three home runs! Her coach couldn't believe it. But when she saw her friend Jake sitting sadly on the bench because he couldn't catch, Lily remembered the sphinx's words.
That night, she returned to the garden. "May I have another papaya? Not for me, but for Jake?"
The sphinx smiled, its stone eyes twinkling. "Selfishness breaks the magic, but sharing makes it stronger."
Lily brought Jake the magical fruit, and soon they were the best catching duo in the league. Every season, they left a fresh papaya by the garden gate as thanks to their winged friend.
And sometimes, if you look closely near the old library, you might still see fireflies dancing around a sphinx who smiles at children playing baseball.
