The Sphinx's Secret Garden

Lila loved spending summers at her grandmother's cottage, where the garden felt like magic. One afternoon, she was running through the tall grass, her bare feet tickling the clover, when she spotted something peculiar behind the ancient palm tree that swayed like a dancing green umbrella.

There, nestled between giant ferns, sat the smallest sphinx Lila had ever imagined. He was no bigger than a pumpkin, with soft golden fur, tiny wings that shimmered like morning dew, and enormous wise eyes. Unlike the scary sphinxes from storybooks, this one looked lonely.

"Hello," Lila whispered, kneeling beside him. "What's your name?"

The sphinx's wings fluttered nervously. "I am Phineas. I've been waiting for a friend who isn't afraid of riddles."

Lila's eyes sparkled. "I love riddles! What's yours?"

Phineas smiled, revealing a tiny dimple. "I have cities but no houses, mountains but no trees, water but no fish. What am I?"

Lila thought hard, tapping her chin. Her grandmother had shown her something just like this in the study. "A map!"

Phineas did a happy somersault. "Correct!" He pointed his paw toward the palm tree's trunk, where a small door had magically appeared. "Behind this door lies the Garden of Forgotten Wishes. But I need a true friend to help me find the courage to enter."

Lila took his tiny paw in hers. "We'll go together."

The door opened to reveal a glowing garden where every flower represented a child's forgotten wish — dreams of flying horses, talking animals, and endless ice cream. Phineas explained that his job was to protect these wishes until children believed in them again.

"You're not scary at all," Lila said, hugging him. "You're the bravest, kindest guardian ever."

That summer, Lila and Phineas became the best of friends. They spent their days running through enchanted gardens, solving riddles, and reminding children that magic exists if you simply believe. Lila learned that true courage isn't about facing scary things alone — it's about having a friend by your side, and that the most magical discoveries often come from the most unexpected places.
