The Sphinx's Secret Garden
Lily loved exploring the old amusement park at the edge of town. Most kids were scared of the rusted rides and creaky machines, but Lily saw magic everywhere.
One day, she found something she'd never noticed before: a small cable car, painted bright purple with gold stars, hiding behind overgrown bushes. The cable stretched up into the clouds, disappearing into mist.
"Whoa!" Lily whispered. She climbed inside.
The cable car hummed to life and began to rise. Up, up, up they went, past treetops, past birds, past clouds themselves. Finally, the car stopped at a floating island covered in sparkling flowers.
In the center of the garden sat a magnificent sphinx with emerald-green feathers and kind golden eyes. Unlike the scary sphinxes from storybooks, this one smiled warmly.
"Welcome, little friend," the sphinx spoke in a voice like wind chimes. "I've been waiting for someone pure of heart to visit my garden."
Lily's eyes widened. "This is YOUR garden? It's beautiful!"
"Indeed." The sphinx gestured to a magnificent tree with fruit that glowed like tiny suns. "These are magic papayas. They grant one wish to those who share them freely."
Lily's stomach grumbled. She was so hungry! But then she remembered her little brother Timmy, who was sick in bed. He'd love something magical.
"Could I... could I take one to my brother?" Lily asked.
The sphinx's golden eyes twinkled. "That's exactly why I grew them. Not for myself, but for those who would give them away."
Lily picked the brightest papaya. When she bit into it later with Timmy, they both grew wings for exactly one hour and danced among the stars together.
That night, Lily learned the best secret of all: the greatest magic isn't in what we keep, but in what we give away.
And every full moon, if you look closely at the sky, you might still see a purple cable car carrying kind children to a garden where a sphinx teaches them that sharing is the most powerful magic of all.
