The Sphinx's Secret Garden

Lily was not a fan of spinach. But when her grandmother served it for dinner, Lily discovered something magical — the spinach leaves formed tiny tunnels, and something GLIMMERED inside them.

A miniature goldfish with rainbow scales swam through an invisible stream between the green leaves. It looked up at her with wise eyes.

"I'm Finn," said the goldfish. "And I need your help."

Lily leaned closer. "You can talk?"

"Only to special friends," Finn bubbled. "I'm a spy for the Great Sphinx, and someone has stolen her magical riddle book! Without it, she can't protect the dreams of children."

Lily's eyes widened. A goldfish spy? A sphinx who protected dreams? This was the most exciting thing that had ever happened to her!

"How can I help?" she asked.

Finn swam in a excited circle. "The thief hid the book in the cereal box at the top of your pantry. But there's a spell on it — only someone who appreciates spinach can break it."

Lily looked at her spinach with new eyes. Maybe it wasn't so bad after all.

She took a big bite and closed her eyes. "I'm ready," she whispered.

Finn glowed softly, and suddenly Lily wasn't in her kitchen anymore. She stood in a golden desert before a magnificent sphinx with wings like sunrise clouds.

"Thank you, young friend," the Sphinx rumbled kindly. "You believed in magic when others would have laughed. That is the greatest power of all."

She touched Lily's forehead, and Lily felt warm and wonderful, like she could do anything.

That night, Lily dreamed she could fly. And when she woke up, there was a single spinach leaf on her pillow, sparkling like an emerald. She smiled and put it in her treasure box, right next to her collection of special things.

From then on, Lily always ate her spinach. Because you never know when a goldfish spy might need your help to save the world's dreams.
