The Sphinx's Secret Garden

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's attic. One rainy afternoon, she found an old floppy hat with silver stars embroidered around the brim. When she tried it on, the attic disappeared!

She stood in a magical garden where flowers sang and trees whispered secrets. But something was wrong — a great stone sphinx sat in the middle of a sparkling blue pool, looking very sad.

"Hello," Lily said bravely. "Why are you sad?"

"My friend Barnaby is stuck," the sphinx rumbled like gentle thunder. "He's a bull who loves to dance, but he ate some enchanted spinach by mistake. Now he's floating in the air and can't come down!"

Lily gasped. A dancing bull! Enchanted spinach! This was the best adventure ever.

"How can I help?" she asked.

The sphinx smiled. "The magic hat you wear — it has power over enchanted things. Spin around three times and say, 'Light as feather, heavy as stone, let the dancing bull touch the ground!'"

Lily spun in circles until she was dizzy, and the silver stars on her hat glowed brighter than the sun.

"Light as feather, heavy as stone, let the dancing bull touch the ground!" she shouted.

POOF! A friendly brown bull appeared from behind a bush, hooves planted safely on the grass. He did a happy little jig.

"Thank you!" Barnaby said. "I was doing pirouettes for three days!"

The sphinx nodded gravely. "You have a kind heart, Lily. For your help, splash in my magic pool. Whatever you wish will appear."

Lily thought carefully. She could wish for toys, candy, or even a castle. But then she looked at her new friends.

"I wish I could visit you whenever I want," she said.

The sphinx dipped his massive stone paw into the water, and ripples of gold spread across the surface. "Then take this —" he pressed a small stone into her hand, "— and whisper 'Sphinx's garden' whenever you wear your magic hat."

Lily hugged Barnaby, waved to the sphinx, and spun back home.

Her grandmother was calling her for dinner. But Lily smiled, touching the stone in her pocket. She knew exactly where she'd go for her next adventure.
