The Sphinx's Secret Garden

Lily loved exploring the forest behind her house. One sunny afternoon, she followed a rusty orange fox down a path she'd never seen before.

The fox stopped at a magnificent stone sphinx half-hidden in vines. The sphinx's lion body and human head seemed to glow in the dappled sunlight.

"Welcome, young explorer," the sphinx spoke in a voice like gentle thunder. "I guard the magical pond where wishes come true."

Lily gasped as the sphinx moved aside to reveal a crystal-clear pond. Inside, the most beautiful goldfish she'd ever seen swam in lazy circles. Its scales shimmered like liquid rainbow.

"Make a wish," whispered the fox, who stood beside her.

But before Lily could speak, the sky darkened. Purple lightning crackled across the clouds! A deep growl echoed from the cave behind the sphinx.

Out lumbered a massive bear, but this bear was different. His fur was studded with tiny stars that twinkled like a night sky.

"The storm is coming," the Star-Bear rumbled gently. "The magic pond needs protection. Only someone with a pure heart can help."

Lily didn't hesitate. "I'll help!"

The sphinx nodded. "Then you must solve my riddle: What has roots as nobody sees, is taller than trees, up, up it goes, and yet never grows?"

Lily thought hard. Then she smiled. "A mountain!"

"Correct!" The sphinx dipped her massive stone head. "You are wise and brave. The goldfish will grant your wish."

The goldfish swam to the surface and spoke in a voice like silver bells. "What is your wish, dear child?"

Lily looked at the fox, the sphinx, the bear, and the magical fish. "I wish that all children could have friends as wonderful as you."

The goldfish's scales flashed brighter than lightning. A warm glow spread through the garden.

"Your wish is granted," the sphinx said, smiling. "And whenever you need us, just follow the fox."

That night, Lily dreamed of magical friends, knowing that kindness is the greatest magic of all.
