The Sphinx's Secret Garden
Lily loved visiting her grandmother's garden at midnight. That's when the magic happened.
One full moon night, she tiptoed outside with her cat **Mittens**. The old stone **sphinx** statue near the roses had always seemed mysterious—its lion body and human head covered in moss, its wings folded against stone sides.
"I wish you could talk," Lily whispered, scratching Mittens behind the ears. The cat purred loudly.
Suddenly, the sphinx's eyes opened. They glowed like golden stars!
"I CAN," the sphinx spoke, its voice like wind through ancient trees. "BUT ONLY ON FULL MOONS, AND ONLY TO THOSE WHO BELIEVE."
Lily gasped. Mittens arched her back but didn't run.
"I'm Lily! This is Mittens!"
"I AM CLEO," said the sphinx. "I HAVE BEEN SLEEPING FOR THREE HUNDRED YEARS."
The stone bull statue across the path suddenly snorted and shook its marble head.
"ABOUT TIME YOU WOKE UP, CLEO!" the bull rumbled. "I'VE BEEN WAITING TO TELL SOMEONE ABOUT THE MAGICAL **SPINACH** PATCH!"
"Spinach?" Lily made a face.
"NOT ORDINARY SPINACH," Cleo explained. "MAGIC SPINACH THAT MAKES YOU WISE. THE ANCIENT EGYPTIANS PLANTED IT HERE CENTURIES AGO."
"But why's it magic?" Lily asked.
"BECAUSE TRUE WISDOM COMES FROM EATING WHAT YOU THINK YOU WON'T LIKE," said the bull—his name was Buster. "TRYING NEW THINGS MAKES YOU **FRIEND** WITH THE WHOLE WORLD."
Mittens meowed as if agreeing.
Cleo extended a stone paw. "COME, LILY. TASTE THE MAGIC SPINACH. BUT FIRST—YOU MUST SOLVE MY RIDDLE."
Lily's eyes twinkled. "I love riddles!"
"WHAT HAS LEGS BUT CANNOT WALK, A BACK BUT CANNOT RUN, AND THE BEST FOOD BUT NO MOUTH?"
Lily thought hard. Mittens rubbed against her leg.
"A table!" Lily exclaimed.
"CORRECT!" Cleo's smile made her stone face look almost human. "NOW, EAT THE SPINACH AND RECEIVE WISDOM."
Lily tried a leaf from the glowing patch. It tasted like sunshine and rainbows mixed together.
Suddenly, she understood everything—why stars twinkle, how cats always land on their feet, and that the best adventures happen when you least expect them.
"You're all my **friends** now," Lily hugged Cleo's stone leg. "Every full moon, I'll visit."
"AND WE'LL BE WAITING," Buster said warmly.
As the sun began to rise, Cleo and Buster turned back into statues. Mittens curled up beside the sphinx, purring.
Lily ran back inside, her heart full of magic, wisdom, and new friends. The best secret was hers alone—except for sharing it with Mittens, of course.
Some secrets are too wonderful not to keep with your best friend.
