The Sphinx's Secret Garden
Lily loved exploring behind her grandmother's house, where the jungle grew thick and mysterious. One afternoon, she pushed through a cluster of palm fronds and gasped.
There, half-hidden in vines, stood a small stone sphinx with emerald eyes. Unlike the ones in books, this sphinx was only knee-high, and its stone face seemed to smile.
"Welcome, young explorer," the sphinx spoke in a voice like wind chimes. "I've waited centuries for someone brave enough to find me."
Lily's eyes widened. "You can talk?"
"I can do many things." The sphinx's tail curled around a patch of ordinary-looking spinach plants. "These are my special treasure. Magic spinach that grants one wish to the pure of heart."
"Really?" Lily knelt beside the plants. "What's the catch?"
The sphinx smiled. "You must answer my riddle: I have horns but cannot charge, I shine brightly in the night sky, and ancient farmers worshipped me. What am I?"
Lily thought hard. Her grandfather loved showing her constellations. She closed her eyes and remembered the glowing shapes they'd traced together on starry nights.
"The bull!" she shouted. "The constellation Taurus!"
The sphinx nodded, and the spinach leaves shimmered with golden light. "Wisdom runs in your family. Now, make your wish."
But Lily shook her head. "I don't want to wish for anything. Can we keep meeting here instead? I'd love a friend who knows ancient secrets."
The sphinx's stone face softened. "That is the greatest wish of all — friendship chosen over magic." From that day on, Lily visited her sphinx friend often, learning that the best adventures are the ones shared between friends.
