The Sphinx's Secret Garden

Lily's golden dog, Buster, always knew when magic was near. One afternoon, he pulled her toward the old library, his tail wagging like a metronome. Inside, behind a dusty bookshelf, they discovered a tiny door no bigger than a breakfast plate.

When Lily pressed her eye to the keyhole, gas escaped like a giggle. The door swung open, revealing a magnificent sphinx with emerald eyes and wings like stained glass.

"I've been waiting for you," said the sphinx. "I need a special spy to help me."

Lily's heart thumped. "A spy? But I'm just a kid!"

"Exactly," purred the sphinx. "Adults never notice the important things."

In the sphinx's magical garden lived the gentlest "zombies" Lily had ever seen—they were toys brought to life by moonlight! Stuffed bears, tin soldiers, and porcelain dolls shuffled about with stiff but friendly movements, caring for the enchanted plants.

"They're not scary," Lily whispered, watching a plush rabbit water glowing flowers with a silver watering can.

"Of course not!" said the sphinx. "They're my Moonlight Friends. But someone is stealing their magic dust, and soon they'll become ordinary toys again."

Buster growled softly at a shadow by the garden wall. Lily crept closer, her detective instincts tingling. She discovered the culprit—a lonely garden gnome who thought the magic dust might make him real.

"Please," Lily said gently, "the magic is what keeps my friends alive. But maybe we can share?"

The sphinx smiled. "A wise solution." She sprinkled a pinch of dust on the gnome, who gasped as he felt his heart beat for the first time.

Now, every full moon, Lily and Buster return to help in the magical garden. The Moonlight Friends shuffle and dance, their movements stiff but full of joy. And sometimes, when you think magic has disappeared, it's just waiting for the right spy to find it again.

"True magic," the sphinx often says, "is friendship shared freely."
