The Sphinx's Secret Garden

Lily loved visiting her grandmother's old house. In the backyard stood a mysterious stone statue with the body of a lion and the head of a human — a sphinx! Grandma said it was magic, but Lily had never seen it move.

One autumn afternoon, as leaves turned bright orange, Lily heard a soft voice. "Young one, the trees need help." She spun around and saw the sphinx blinking at her!

"What do you mean?" Lily whispered, her heart pounding with excitement and a little bit of fear.

"The magical orange grove is fading," the sphinx said sadly. "Only someone pure of heart can save it. You must solve my riddle."

Before Lily could answer, her puppy Buster bounded into the garden. The little dog wagged his tail and happily licked the sphinx's stone paw. The sphinx's eyes twinkled.

"A faithful companion! Your heart is good. Here is your riddle: I have cities but no houses, mountains but no trees, water but no fish. What am I?"

Lily thought hard. She looked at Buster chasing butterflies through the orange leaves. She thought about maps she'd seen in school, showing places far away.

"A map!" Lily cried out, jumping up and down.

"Correct!" The sphinx's eyes glowed golden. Suddenly, the backyard transformed into a beautiful orchard filled with the most radiant orange trees Lily had ever seen. Each fruit glowed like tiny suns, warming the autumn air.

"For your kindness and cleverness," the sphinx said, "you may visit this garden whenever you wish. And Buster too."

From that day on, Lily learned that magic exists everywhere for those who believe, that true friends make every adventure better, and that sometimes the oldest things hold the most wonderful secrets.
