The Sphinx's Secret Garden
Lily loved exploring behind her grandmother's house. One afternoon, she followed a trail of sparkling butterflies deeper into the woods than she'd ever gone before. The trees grew thick and golden light filtered through leaves in patterns that danced like tiny fairies.
Suddenly, Lily stopped. Before her stood the most magnificent creature she had ever seen—a great golden sphinx with the body of a lion and the wise face of an owl. Its feathers shimmered like sunrise, and its eyes held the kindness of someone who had watched over these woods for a thousand years.
"Welcome, young one," the sphinx spoke in a voice like gentle stream water flowing over smooth stones. "I have been waiting for someone with a curious heart."
Lily's eyes widened. "You can talk?"
"Many things can talk when you listen with your heart," the sphinx smiled. "Come, I want to show you something special."
The sphinx led Lily through a hidden path to a secret garden where a crystal-clear spring bubbled up from between ancient stones. But what made Lily gasp were the trees growing around it—every single one bore the most beautiful oranges she had ever seen. They glowed like tiny suns, their peel catching the light in shimmering waves.
"These are magic oranges," the sphinx explained. "They grow only here, where the sweetest water meets the warmest earth. Each one holds a special wish—joy, courage, friendship, wonder."
Lily's stomach grumbled. She hadn't eaten since breakfast.
"You may pick one," the sphinx said gently. "But remember—magic oranges are best when shared."
Lily carefully chose the perfect orange, warm and heavy in her hands. As she peeled it, the most wonderful fragrance filled the air—like sunshine and happiness together. But instead of eating it all herself, she thought of her little brother Timmy, who was sick in bed.
"Can I take this to Timmy?" she asked.
The sphinx's eyes twinkled. "That is exactly why I waited for you, Lily. You have the wisest heart of any who have found this place."
Lily ran home, the orange cradled carefully in her hands. When she shared it with Timmy, something magical happened. With every bite they took together, the orange became sweeter and bigger, until both were full and laughing. Timmy's cheeks turned pink, and he sat up for the first time in days.
Lily never found the secret garden again, but she knew the sphinx was still there, waiting for another child with a curious heart and a generous spirit. And sometimes, when she ate oranges with Timmy, she could taste a tiny bit of magic—especially when they shared.
