The Sphinx's Secret Garden
Lily loved exploring, especially on stormy days when the sky painted itself in shades of purple and gray. Today, as lightning danced across the clouds like sparkler fingers, she discovered something magical in her grandmother's garden.
Behind the old rosebush, a stone sphinx sat wearing a baseball cap instead of a crown. His wings were tucked neatly against his sides, and in his paws, he held a bundle of bright green leaves.
"Are you real?" Lily whispered, raindrops tapping her nose like tiny water drums.
The sphinx blinked golden eyes. "As real as spinach," he rumbled, his voice like distant thunder. "I'm Orion. Would you like to be my friend?"
Lily's heart jumped like a grasshopper. "Yes! But why are you holding spinach?"
Orion's wings fluttered excitedly. "This isn't ordinary spinach. It's storm-grown from the magical patch where lightning strikes the earth. One leaf gives you the courage to face any fear."
Water puddled around Lily's sneakers as she remembered her worry about tomorrow's school presentation. "I need that courage. What must I do?"
The sphinx smiled mysteriously. "Answer my riddle: What can fall but never break, and what can break but never fall?"
Lightning flashed again, illuminating Orion's patient face. Lily thought hard about things she knew—her grandmother's promises, autumn leaves, morning dew, friendship...
"Water falls but never breaks!" she exclaimed. "And promises can break but never fall!"
Orion's wings spread wide like rainbows. "Correct! You already have the courage." He placed a spinach leaf in her palm. "But take this anyway—it tastes like bravery."
Lily ate the leaf, and suddenly she understood: true courage wasn't magic. It was facing fears while holding onto friendship, even in stormy weather.
"Thank you, Orion," she said, hugging his stone neck.
The sphinx nuzzled her back. "Real friends help each other sparkle, like lightning in the dark."
As Lily ran home through puddles, she knew tomorrow's presentation would be wonderful. She had a sphinx friend, magical spinach in her tummy, and courage blooming in her heart like a flower after rain.
