The Sphinx's Secret Garden
Barnaby was a small spotted dog with ears that flopped when he ran. Every day, he trotted through the meadow behind his house, chasing butterflies and sniffing flowers. But one sunny afternoon, he discovered something extraordinary—a golden gate that had never been there before.
Barnaby squeezed through and gasped. Before him stood a creature with the body of a lion and the head of a wise human. It was a sphinx!
"Welcome, little one," said the sphinx, her voice like music. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to visit."
Behind her sat a tree with glowing orange fruit that shimmered like tiny suns. Each perfect orange smelled of dreams and magic.
"These oranges grant wishes," the sphinx explained sadly. "But I've been alone so long, I've forgotten what to wish for."
Barnaby's tail wagged. "I'm here now! We can wish together!"
From a sparkling pond nearby, a goldfish popped to the surface. She had scales like rainbows and fins like flowing silk.
"I can help!" she bubblesplashed. "I know three hundred twenty-seven wishes, and I'm learning more every day!"
The sphinx's eyes widened with delight. "A friend who can swim and a friend who can run?"
Barnaby rolled on his back, paws in the air. The sphinx laughed, and the sound made all the oranges glow brighter. The goldfish did a happy flip, creating a rainbow splash.
"I wish..." the sphinx said slowly, "for friends who will stay forever."
Barnaby licked her nose. "Check!" The goldfish nodded. "Double-check!"
Together they shared a magical orange. It tasted like sunshine and friendship and the feeling of coming home.
Now every day, the sphinx tends her orange tree, Barnaby chases imaginary sphinx-kittens, and the goldfish tells stories to anyone who visits. Because some wishes aren't about magic at all—sometimes the best wishes are already sitting right beside you.
