The Sphinx's Secret Garden

Lily loved visiting her grandmother's backyard, especially near the old stone pool where mysterious lily pads floated. Every evening after dinner, she'd sneak outside to toss peas into the water, hoping to glimpse the magical creature her grandmother whispered about.

"Feed her spinach," Grandma had said with a wink. "Spinach leaves, not peas. The sphinx has particular tastes."

Lily giggled. A sphinx? In a tiny backyard pool? That was just a story to make her eat her vegetables.

But one moonlit night, as she placed a perfect green spinach leaf near the water's edge, the water began to ripple. Slowly, gracefully, a tiny sphinx emerged from the pool's depths. She was no bigger than a cat, with golden fur, gentle amber eyes, and small feathery wings.

"Thank you, young friend," the sphinx said, her voice sounding like wind chimes. "I am Cleo, guardian of this magical pool. For centuries, I've protected the dreams of children who visit this garden."

Lily sat beside the water, amazed. "But why spinach?"

Cleo smiled mysteriously. "Because spinach represents something important — strength. Not the kind that makes you strong, but the kind that makes you brave. Bravery grows from within, like plants from rich soil."

The sphinx told Lily stories of brave children who faced their fears, of lonely kids who found courage to make friends, of scared students who stood up to bullies. Each story shimmered like moonlight on the pool's surface.

"But I'm not brave," Lily said quietly. "I'm afraid of the dark, and I don't want to go to school tomorrow because I have to give a speech."

Cleo nudged Lily's hand with her soft nose. "True bravery isn't having no fear. It's being scared and doing what's right anyway. Just like how spinach leaves look ordinary but give you power, your nervousness is preparing you for something important."

Lily thought about this. The spinach hadn't looked special, yet the sphinx said it gave strength.

"Will you visit me again?" Cleo asked, her wings fluttering.

"Every night," Lily promised. "And I'll bring extra spinach."

The next morning, Lily stood before her class, her heart pounding. She closed her eyes and remembered Cleo's words, felt the courage growing within her like spinach in a garden. When she began speaking, her voice was clear and strong.

That evening, Lily ran to the pool with a whole bunch of spinach. The sphinx appeared instantly, and they shared stories of bravery under the stars, the tiny guardian and her brave friend, united by courage and green leaves.
