The Sphinx's Secret Garden

Leo was running through the golden meadow behind his house, his bare feet pressing into the warm grass. The sun painted everything in shades of honey and amber. He loved exploring here, where the world felt big and full of secrets.

That's when he saw it—a stone sphinx, no bigger than a garden gnome, resting beneath an ancient oak tree. Its stone eyes seemed to twinkle.

"Hello, little one," the sphinx said, her voice like wind chimes. Leo gasped. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to find me."

"You can talk?"

"I can do many things." The sphinx's wings unfurled—giant, crystal wings that caught the sunlight. "Climb on my back. There's something wonderful I want to show you."

Leo scrambled onto the sphinx's stone back, and suddenly they were soaring above the meadow. Below, a hidden lake appeared, its surface shimmering like liquid stars.

"This is the Mirror Lake," the sphinx explained. "It shows you what's in your heart."

They landed softly on the shore. The sphinx touched the water, and ripples turned to silver. "Go swimming," she whispered. "But listen closely to what the water tells you."

Leo slipped into the cool, magical water. As he swam, he heard his own thoughts echo back—not just words, but feelings. He felt how much he missed his grandmother. He felt scared about starting at a new school next week. He felt lonely sometimes.

"The lake shows us our truth so we don't have to carry it alone," the sphinx said when he emerged. "And now, it's time for my riddle."

Leo's eyes widened. "A riddle?"

"What is the strongest thing in the world?"

Leo thought hard. "Mountains? Hurricanes?"

The sphinx smiled. "Those are powerful, yes. But the strongest thing is asking for help. That takes more courage than doing everything yourself."

Leo looked at the sphinx with new understanding. "Can I come back?"

"You never really leave." She touched his forehead with a stone paw. "Now you have a friend who knows your heart. And knowing yourself is the greatest adventure of all."

Leo ran home that evening with something glowing in his pocket—a tiny stone sphinx that would always remind him: the bravest thing anyone can do is let others in.
