The Sphinx's Secret Garden
Lily loved exploring her grandmother's backyard, especially the secret corner behind the old tool shed. That's where she found something extraordinary — a small stone sphinx, no bigger than a cat, resting beside a patch of vibrant green spinach.
"Hello there," Lily whispered, kneeling down.
The sphinx's stone eyes twinkled. To her amazement, it stretched its paws and spoke in a voice like rustling leaves. "Hello, young explorer. I've been waiting for someone kind to find me."
Lily's eyes grew wide. "You're alive!"
"I am," said the sphinx. "But I've lost something precious — my golden orange. It fell into the swimming pond when I was practicing my flying yesterday. Without it, I can't return to my magical home beyond the palm trees."
Lily peered toward the garden pond, where orange goldfish darted through crystal-clear water. "I can help you! I love swimming."
The sphinx smiled. "Thank you, brave friend. But there's one thing you should know — the fish who took my orange are tricksters. They'll only give it back if you answer their riddle."
Lily nodded determinedly. Together they walked to the pond's edge, where three fish with shimmering scales surfaced.
"What has roots as nobody sees, is taller than trees, up, up it goes, and yet never grows?" the fish chorused.
Lily thought hard, remembering how the sphinx had been trapped yet patient. "A mountain!"
The fish bubbled with delight and returned the golden orange. The sphinx caught it gently in its paws, and suddenly, it began to glow, growing larger until its stone wings became real.
"Thank you, Lily," the sphinx said. "You were brave and clever. But more importantly, you showed kindness to someone in need. That's the greatest magic of all."
The sphinx flew toward the sunset, but not before leaving something behind — a tiny stone sphinx just like itself, sitting beside the spinach patch. Sometimes, the most magical adventures begin with helping a friend in need.
