The Sphinx's Secret Garden
Lily's golden retriever, Buster, barked at something strange in the garden. Behind the old oak tree stood a magnificent stone sphinx with emerald eyes that sparkled like tiny stars.
The sphinx spoke in a voice like gentle wind chimes. "Young keeper of the iphone, I have waited many moons."
Lily clutched her phone—she had been playing games when Buster pulled her outside. "You can talk?"
"I am the Guardian of Wonders," the sphinx said. "Your magical screen has opened the portal between worlds. But true magic requires more than tapping glass." The sphinx gestured with a stone paw toward a crystal spring nearby. Water bubbled up, glowing with rainbow light.
"This water grants one wish," the sphinx continued. "But choose wisely. Some children wish for toys or candy or endless video games. Their wishes fade like morning mist."
Buster nudged Lily's hand. She looked at the magical water, then at her phone, then at her faithful dog who had never asked for anything but love and walks.
"I wish," Lily said, "that every child could have a best friend like Buster."
The sphinx smiled, and something magical happened. A palm tree sprouted from the ground, its leaves shimmering with golden light. Each palm held a small puppy—some with spots, some fluffy, some tiny—each one wagging its tail and ready to love someone.
"You have chosen well," the sphinx said. "Friendship is the greatest magic of all."
Lily's phone buzzed with a game notification, but she didn't look. She was too busy hugging Buster and watching the palm tree spread its friendship magic across the world.
That night, Lily fell asleep dreaming of sphinxes, magical water, and the wonderful discovery that some treasures don't come from screens at all—they come from the heart.
