The Sphinx's Secret Garden
Lily loved visiting her grandmother's house, especially the backyard with its old swimming **pool** that hadn't held water in years. Instead, it had become a secret garden filled with wildflowers and climbing vines.
One afternoon, Lily was **running** through the overgrown grass when she noticed something strange among the flowers. A stone creature sat on a mossy rock – a creature with the body of a lion and the head of a human.
"A **sphinx**!" Lily whispered, remembering from her storybook.
The sphinx's stone eyes suddenly twinkled. "I am Zara, guardian of this magical place," she spoke in a voice like wind chimes. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to find me."
Lily's heart raced with excitement. "Are you going to ask me a riddle?"
Zara nodded, her stone mane seeming to flutter. "Yes, little one. What is green and leafy, makes you strong, but some children wrinkle their noses at it?"
Lily thought hard. She remembered how her grandmother always grew special vegetables in the corner of the garden. "**Spinach**!" she exclaimed.
"Correct!" Zara's smile made the air shimmer with sparkles. "Grandmother's spinach isn't ordinary – it gives magical powers to those who believe in themselves."
From behind the sphinx, Lily saw grandmother's spinach patch glowing with a soft green light. Zara explained that anyone who ate the magical spinach would gain the courage to do kind things for others.
That evening, Lily and grandmother made a salad together. As Lily ate the spinach, she felt warm and brave inside. The next day, she helped a new girl at school who was sitting alone, and stood up to bullies who were being mean.
Whenever Lily visited grandmother's house, she would visit Zara too. The sphinx taught her that true magic wasn't just in spells – it was in having the courage to be kind, even when it's hard.
And that, Zara winked, was the greatest secret of all.
