The Sphinx's Secret Garden

Lily loved being a spy. Every day after school, she'd sneak through her neighborhood with her magnifying glass, searching for mysteries. One Tuesday, she spotted something peculiar behind Old Mr. Abernathy's fence—a flash of golden stone between the rosebushes.

That's when she met him: a magnificent sphinx with emerald eyes and wings like sunset clouds. But this sphinx wasn't like the ones in books. He was tiny, no bigger than a garden gnome, and he looked terribly sad.

"I've been guarding this magical garden for three thousand years," the sphinx sighed, "but I've forgotten my riddle. Without it, I can't test visitors, and no one ever stops to visit."

Lily's spy instincts tingled. "I can help! But first, what's that smell?"

The sphinx perked up. "My favorite—spinach! The magical vegetables here grow enchanted leaves. They give you the strength of ten elephants and the wisdom of a hundred owls."

Suddenly, the ground began to rumble. From the earth crawled a zombie—but not a scary one. This zombie wore gardening gloves and a floppy hat, and he looked groggy, like someone who'd slept through three alarms.

"That's Zombot, "the sphinx whispered. "He was the royal gardener, cursed to tend this garden forever. He only wakes up to water the plants at midnight."

Zombot shuffled toward them, moaning softly. But instead of frightening Lily, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a sparkling silver seed.

"For you," Zombot mumbled, his voice rusty like old hinges. "Plant it, and you'll always find your way back to magic."

Lily realized something wonderful: being a spy wasn't just about discovering secrets—it was about making friends. She took the seed, and the sphinx's riddle suddenly came to her: "What opens doors but has no key?"

"A friendship!" Lily cried out.

The sphinx beamed, his wings shimmering. "Exactly right, clever spy!"

Now Lily visits every week. She brings fresh spinach sandwiches for the sphinx, helps Zombot with his watering, and together they tend the most magical garden in the world. Sometimes the best discoveries aren't secrets at all—they're friends waiting to be found.
