The Sphinx's Secret Game

Emma's curly red hair bounced as she ran through the overgrown path behind her house. She'd found something magical yesterday - an ancient stone sphinx half-buried in the leaves!

Today, Emma brought her baseball glove. "Want to play?" she asked, tossing the ball toward the stone creature.

The sphinx's lion tail twitched. Golden eyes opened, sparkling like morning sunlight. "I've been sleeping for three hundred years," said a warm, rumbly voice. "Baseball sounds wonderful."

Emma gasped. "You're alive!"

The sphinx stretched - stone turning into soft golden fur. "I'm Cleo. And you've woken me with your kindness."

They played until sunset. Cleo was amazing! Her powerful paws could hit the ball into the clouds. Emma laughed harder than she ever had before.

"Tomorrow," Cleo said, "I'll show you my secret place."

What a secret it was! A hidden crystal pool appeared where no pool should exist. "Swimming here makes you float like magic," Cleo explained.

They splashed and played for hours. Emma felt weightless, like she could fly!

"Why were you asleep so long?" Emma asked later.

Cleo looked sad. "People stopped visiting. I got lonely. But you - you're my first real friend."

Emma hugged Cleo's giant paw. "You'll never be lonely again. I'll come every day!"

And she did. Emma brought her whole baseball team to meet Cleo. At first, they were scared. But when Cleo hit the ball over six trees, everyone cheered!

Cleo became the team's lucky mascot. Emma learned that the best friends aren't always the ones you expect - sometimes they're ancient, magical, and have lion paws.

And Cleo learned something too: friendship is the most powerful magic of all. It can wake sleeping sphinxes and make ordinary afternoons extraordinary.

Now every sunset, you can hear them laughing - a girl with red hair and a golden sphinx, playing baseball by the secret pool, where magic is as real as friendship itself.
