The Sphinx's Secret Game

Lily pushed aside the morning glory vines and gasped. A golden cat sat on the old stone bench, watching her with eyes like precious gems. The cat's fur shimmered like sunlight on honey.

"Hello," Lily whispered, holding out her hand. The cat dipped its head gracefully—almost like a bow.

That evening, Lily returned with a ball of yarn. But as she approached, the golden cat stretched and transformed. Small wings unfolded from its shoulders. A tiny riddle-keeper's smile appeared on its face.

"I am a sphinx," the creature said, its voice like chimes in the breeze. "Would you like to play?"

Lily's eyes widened. She'd read about sphinxes in her storybooks—mysterious guardians who asked riddles. But this sphinx wanted to play?

The sphinx led her behind the garden shed, where a tiny padel court shimmered into existence. The court was made of moonlight and magic, the net woven from spider silk.

"My grandmother taught me this game," the sphinx explained, tossing Lily a glowing racquet. "In the old days, sphinxes and children played together every summer solstice."

They played until fireflies began to dance. Lily laughed as the sphinx swooped and dove, returning impossible shots. The ball sparkled like captured starlight.

"You're wonderful at this!" Lily cried.

The sphinx smiled. "Practice makes magic. But also—" its gem-like eyes twinkled—"having fun makes you better. That's the secret."

As the moon climbed high, the sphinx transformed back into a cat. "Come back tomorrow. I'll teach you the special serve."

Lily hugged the golden cat goodnight, her heart full of wonder. Some secrets, she realized, are meant to be shared. And the best friends are the ones who surprise you.

In her room, she placed her padel racquet by the window. Tomorrow couldn't come fast enough.
