The Sphinx's Secret Game

Lily loved running through the park behind her house. Every afternoon after school, she'd race the wind, her sneakers pounding against the grass until her cheeks turned pink.

One Tuesday, she discovered something magical—a glowing padel court hidden between two ancient oak trees. The net sparkled like captured starlight.

"Who dares to enter my court?" a voice rumbled, friendly and deep.

Lily gasped. From behind the trees emerged a magnificent sphinx with emerald-green wings and kind, golden eyes. But this sphinx wasn't like the ones in books—he wore a backward baseball cap and held a padel racquet!

"I'm Lily!" she said, eyes wide with wonder. "Are you... real?"

The sphinx laughed—a sound like wind chimes. "As real as imagination itself! I've been waiting for someone worthy to play the Midnight Game."

Lily's little brother Max peeked from behind a bush, wearing his favorite zombie costume from Halloween. His green face paint was smudged, but his plastic zombie teeth made him look adorably fierce.

"Can I play too?" Max asked, "I'm a scary zombie! Raaaah!"

The sphinx chuckled. "A zombie! Perfect! In the Midnight Game, being scary makes you STRONGER."

They played padel until fireflies danced around them. The sphinx taught them secret moves—how to hit the ball so it became a butterfly mid-flight, how to jump so high they could catch falling stars. Max chased balls like a zombie hunting for brains, making Lily giggle until her sides hurt.

"You're both champions," the sphinx said as the moon rose. "But remember—true magic happens not when you win, but when you play together with joy in your hearts."

"Will you be here tomorrow?" Lily asked, hugging her racquet tight.

The sphinx winked. "Whenever children remember that friendship is the greatest magic of all."

The next day, the court looked ordinary. But Lily and Max knew better. Every time they played padel together, laughing and running, they could feel the sphinx's magic in every swing—because the best games are the ones played with love.
