The Sphinx's Secret Game
Lily loved baseball more than anything. Every day after school, she'd grab her glove and run to the park, dreaming of hitting the perfect home run. One rainy afternoon, as gray clouds gathered overhead, she noticed something strange near the old oak tree.
A golden sphinx with sparkling emerald eyes sat beside the backstop. Unlike the statues she'd seen in books, this sphinx was small—only kitten-sized—and looked worried.
"Please help!" the sphinx meowed. "I've lost my Thunder Vitamin!"
Lily knelt down. "What's a Thunder Vitamin?"
"It's a magical pill that gives sphinxes the power to create beautiful lightning shows for children's birthday parties," the sphinx explained sadly. "I dropped it when a storm scared me. Now I can't make any more magic!"
Just then, a bright flash of lightning streaked across the dark sky. Lily noticed something glowing near third base.
"Look!" she pointed.
They ran together through the drizzle. There, sitting on a baseball, was a tiny orange pill that pulsed with golden light. But as Lily reached for it, a gust of wind blew it toward the fence.
"We have to work as a team!" Lily said. She grabbed her glove. "Stand there and I'll throw it to you!"
The sphinx nodded. Lily scooped up the baseball with the Thunder Vitamin balanced perfectly on top. With all her might, she tossed a perfect pitch. The sphinx leaped gracefully and caught the vitamin in its paws.
"Thank you, Lily!" The sphinx's eyes glowed brighter than ever. "For helping me, I'll grant you one wish."
Lily thought for a moment. "I don't need a wish. Helping you was the best adventure ever."
The sphinx smiled. "That's the most powerful wish of all—kindness." Suddenly, the sky cleared, and rainbow-colored lightning danced overhead. "You'll never strike out in baseball again, because you have the biggest heart of any player I've ever met."
From that day on, whenever Lily played baseball, she remembered that some victories are much more important than winning games. And sometimes, the best teammates are the ones you least expect.
