The Sphinx's Secret Game
Lily brushed her messy brown hair from her eyes and stared at the old stone statue in her grandmother's garden. It looked just like a sphinx from her storybooks — lion body, human face, and wings tucked at its sides.
"I know you're watching me," Lily whispered, feeling like a spy on a secret mission.
The next morning, Lily brought her best friend Sam to see the sphinx. Sam carried his padel racket, excited to practice their favorite game in the garden.
"It's just a statue, Lily," Sam said, swinging his racket through the air.
But then something magical happened. The stone sphinx's eyes blinked, and its wings stretched wide. Lily's hair stood on end with wonder.
"I am Sphinx," the creature spoke in a voice like wind through ancient temples. "I have slept for one hundred years. Will you play padel with me?"
Lily and Sam couldn't believe their eyes! The sphinx wanted to learn their favorite game.
"But you don't have a racket," Sam noticed.
Sphinx smiled mysteriously. A golden padel appeared in her paw, sparkling with magic.
They played all afternoon. Sphinx was surprisingly good! She could jump higher than any human, and her wings helped her reach impossible shots. But more importantly, she taught them something special about friendship.
"True friends," Sphinx explained, "don't spy on each other's secrets. They share them freely, like how I share my magic with you."
As the sun began to set, Sphinx grew sleepy again. "Thank you for waking me," she yawned, her body slowly turning back to stone. "Come back tomorrow. I still have much to learn about this wonderful game."
Lily and Sam walked home, hand in hand, already planning their next game with their newest friend. They knew some secrets were too special to keep — the best kind of secrets are the ones you share with your friends.
