The Sphinx's Secret Game
Lily loved exploring behind the old library, where the grass grew tall and secrets hid. One afternoon, she heard something strange—*thwack, thwack, thwack.* Like a bat hitting a ball, but magical somehow.
She crept closer, feeling like a tiny spy on a secret mission. What she saw made her gasp.
A sphinx sat by the stream, lion body golden in sunlight, human face smiling. And the sphinx was playing baseball! A enchanted ball zoomed through the air, and the sphinx swatted it with an old wooden bat into the water.
*SPLOSH!*
"Ha! Another home run!" the sphinx laughed, her voice like wind chimes. "But oh, how I wish I had a friend to play with."
Lily stepped forward, trembling. "I know baseball! My dad taught me!"
The sphinx's eyes widened. "You can see me?"
Lily nodded. The sphinx explained she was the Guardian of Games, cursed to play alone until someone pure of heart noticed her. The water around them sparkled with joy.
"Will you play with me?" the sphinx asked, hope shining in her eyes.
"Yes!" Lily cried.
They played until sunset—Lily hit her first magical home run, and the sphinx cheered so loudly that birds joined in singing. As the first star appeared, the sphinx's curse lifted. She could now visit children's dreams, bringing fun to everyone.
"Thank you, Lily," the sphinx whispered. "You saw me when no one else bothered to look. That's the greatest magic of all."
Lily waved goodbye as the sphinx dissolved into sparkling dust, knowing true friends are found when you open your heart to the unexpected.
