The Sphinx's Secret Game

Ten-year-old Lily knelt beside her golden retriever, Barnaby, in the dusty museum. Her nose almost touched the ancient Egyptian sphinx statue. The guard had stepped away for just a moment.

"I wish you could talk," she whispered, tracing the stone paw with her finger.

Barnaby whined and nudged her hand with his wet nose. Her iPhone buzzed in her pocket — Mom calling for dinner. Again.

The Sphinx's eyes suddenly glowed amber. Lily gasped as the stone lips curved into a smile.

"I will grant you one wish, child," the Sphinx rumbled, "if you can answer my riddle. But be warned — I love baseball."

"Baseball?" Lily tilted her head. "But... you're from ancient Egypt!"

"Statues watch everything," the Sphinx winked. "Here's your riddle: I have nine players but no team. I have innings but no time. What am I?"

Lily's heart raced. She'd played softball last summer! But before she could answer, the museum lights flickered. A constellation in the night sky through the skylight suddenly shifted — the Great Bull constellation lowered its horns as if listening.

"Think!" Barnaby seemed to say with his big brown eyes.

"You're..." Lily's eyes widened. "You're a baseball DIAMOND! Like on the field!"

The Sphinx's stone face beamed. "Correct! And because you solved it quickly, you get a bonus wish."

"I wish..." Lily looked at Barnaby, then at the Sphinx. "I wish for friends who love adventures as much as I do."

The Sphinx's eyes twinkled like stars. "Granted. But remember — the best adventures find you when you're kind to others."

That night, Lily dreamed of playing baseball under the stars with a team of magical creatures: the Sphinx as umpire, Barnaby chasing fly balls, and the constellation Bull running bases.

The next morning, three new kids moved in next door. One held a baseball glove.

"Want to play?" asked the girl with curly hair.

Lily grinned, patting Barnaby's head. Some wishes come true in the most magical ways.
