The Sphinx's Secret Game

Max loved playing baseball in his backyard with Barnaby, his golden retriever. Every afternoon, they'd play catch until the sun painted the sky orange. But today was different. As Max threw the ball high, a crack of lightning split the sky—though no rain fell.

Barnaby barked excitedly and chased the ball into the mysterious fog that had suddenly appeared in the garden. Max ran after his dog, but when he emerged from the mist, everything had changed.

In front of him sat a great stone sphinx with emerald eyes that glowed like fireflies. "Welcome, young one," the sphinx rumbled gently. "I have waited one hundred years for someone brave enough to play my game."

Max's heart beat fast, but Barnaby licked his hand, giving him courage.

"I love games!" Max said. "What do we play?"

The sphinx smiled mysteriously. "A game of wisdom. Answer my riddle, and you may return home with a special gift. But answer wrong, and you'll stay here forever."

Max swallowed hard but nodded.

"I am invisible but make you strong," the sphinx said. "I come in many colors and keep you healthy all day long. What am I?"

Max thought hard. Invisible... strong... healthy... colors...

Suddenly, he remembered what his mom said every morning at breakfast! He and Barnaby took their special orange chewables together.

"A vitamin!" Max shouted.

The sphinx's eyes sparkled with delight. "Correct! You have shown both wisdom and courage."

She waved her paw, and the fog lifted. Max found himself back in his yard with Barnaby—but something was different.

In his pocket glowed a small amber stone shaped like a baseball. Whenever Max felt scared or unsure, he held it, and it filled him with the same courage he'd felt facing the sphinx.

"You know, Barnaby," Max whispered, hugging his dog, "being brave isn't about not being scared. It's about facing your fears, even when your heart beats fast."

From that day on, Max never feared a challenge. And every time lightning flashed across the sky, he remembered the sphinx's secret game and the brave boy he'd become.
