The Sphinx's Secret Game

Lily loved swimming in the magical lake behind her house. Every evening at sunset, the water turned purple and sparkled like tiny stars.

One day, while Lily was practicing her baseball swing with an old wooden bat, something amazing happened. A bolt of lightning cracked across the sky—even though it wasn't raining! The lightning bolt hit the ground nearby, and when Lily looked, she saw a creature appear.

It was a sphinx, but not like the ones in books. This sphinx had soft brown fur and kind golden eyes. She looked like a giant cat with wings.

"Hello, little one," the sphinx said gently. "I've been watching you play. Your baseball swing needs practice, but your heart is full of courage."

Lily's eyes went wide. "You can talk?"

"I can do many things," the sphinx purred. "Would you like to learn something special?"

Suddenly, a big bear lumbered out of the forest. Lily felt scared, but the bear smiled and waved a friendly paw. "I'm Barnaby! Don't be afraid."

"Barnaby loves baseball too," the sphinx explained. "But he's too big to hold a regular bat. Would you help him?"

Lily thought for a moment. "Maybe he could use a tree branch as a bat! And I could pitch!"

For hours, Lily, the sphinx, and Barnaby played baseball. When the sun started to set, the sphinx had a surprise. She clapped her wings together, and suddenly lightning filled the sky again—but this time, the lightning formed glowing words in the air.

TRUE FRIENDSHIP COMES IN ALL SHAPES AND SIZES.

"That's my lesson for you," the sphinx whispered. "And now, for helping Barnaby play, I have one more gift."

She touched Lily's baseball with her wing. The ball began to glow.

"This ball will always come back to you, no matter how far you hit it. But remember—the best games are the ones played with friends who make you smile."

That night, as Lily swam in her magical lake under the stars, she knew she had found friends she would never forget. The sphinx visited often after that day, and Barnaby became the best first baseman anyone could ask for.

And sometimes, if you look carefully during a storm, you might see lightning that glows like a smile—reminding you that magic is real, and friendship is the greatest magic of all.
