The Sphinx's Secret Friends

Luna loved the old stone statue in her grandmother's garden. It was a small sphinx, with the body of a lion and the head of a wise human, covered in moss and flowers. Every day, Luna would sit beside it and read her books aloud.

One full moon night, Luna heard something strange. She peeked through her window and gasped. The sphinx was stretching its stone paws!

"Hello, little one," the sphinx rumbled softly. "I am Cleo. I've been waiting for someone like you."

Luna's cat, Mittens, darted outside and immediately started rubbing against Cleo's stone leg, purring loudly.

"Ah, a cat!" Cleo smiled. "Cats are the keepers of secrets. Perhaps this one can help me."

"Help you with what?" Luna asked, slipping outside in her pajamas.

"I've forgotten my riddles," Cleo admitted sadly. "Without riddles, a sphinx is just a statue. I need to visit the Cloud Bull who guards the Riddle Spring. But I'm too heavy to climb to the clouds."

Mittens meowed and tugged Luna's nightgown toward the old oak tree.

"The Cloud Bull appears only to the brave and kind," Cleo explained. "And he grants wishes to those who bring him gifts."

Luna thought hard. She ran inside and returned with three things: her grandmother's silver mirror, a jar of honey from the kitchen, and her favorite storybook.

At midnight, a magnificent white bull with glowing horns descended from the stars. His hooves made no sound on the grass.

"I am Nimbus," the bull said gently. "What gifts do you bring?"

"The mirror shows truth," Luna said. "The honey is for sweetness. And the book is for stories that never end."

Nimbus bowed his massive head. "These are worthy gifts. What is your wish?"

"We need riddles for Cleo!" Luna said.

Nimbus laughed — a sound like distant thunder. "The best riddles come from friendship. Here is one: What has legs but cannot walk? What has a heart but cannot feel? What has pages but cannot speak?"

"A book!" Luna cried.

"Correct!" Cleo's stone body began to glow. "And here is mine: I am not alive, but I grow. I don't have lungs, but I need air. What am I?"

"Fire!" Mittens meowed proudly.

Nimbus smiled. "You already have all the riddles you need. They come from friendship and wonder."

Cleo shone brighter and brighter, transforming from stone into a creature of golden light. "Thank you, Luna. Thank you, Mittens. You've given me back my magic."

From that night on, Luna, Mittens, and Cleo had wonderful adventures. And sometimes, on full moons, Nimbus would visit, and they would share riddles and stories under the stars.

Luna learned something important: the best magic doesn't come from being powerful or scary. It comes from kindness, friendship, and never being afraid to ask for help.

And Mittens? Well, Mittens became the official Riddle Cat, sleeping on Cleo's golden shoulder and dreaming of impossible things, exactly as a cat should.
