The Sphinx's Secret Friend

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's magical garden. One afternoon, she discovered something extraordinary behind the old palm tree—a stone sphinx with twinkling emerald eyes!

"Hello, little one," the sphinx spoke in a voice like gentle chimes. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to find me."

Lily's eyes widened. "You're magical!"

"Indeed," the sphinx purred. "But I'm lonely. My best friend, Zimby, has been trapped in a deep sleep spell for one hundred years."

"What's Zimby?" Lily asked.

"He looks like a zombie, but he's the kindest friend imaginable," the sphinx explained. "He shuffles and groans, but that's just because the sleep spell makes him clumsy. He would never hurt anyone."

Lily's heart raced with adventure. "How can I help?"

"The magic orange tree in the center of the garden bears fruit that can break any spell," said the sphinx. "But only someone with a pure heart can pick them."

Lily rushed to the orange tree, but the branches kept moving away! She remembered what her grandmother taught her: "Magic responds to kindness, not force."

Instead of grabbing, Lily whispered, "Please, Mr. Orange Tree, my friend needs help."

The branches stilled. Three perfect oranges dropped into her hands.

Together, Lily and the sphinx squeezed the magical juice over Zimby's stone form. Slowly, color returned to his gray skin. His eyes opened, golden and warm.

"Lily!" Zimby cheered, doing a happy zombie dance. "You saved me!"

"Zimby might look different," the sphinx told Lily, "but true friendship sees with the heart, not the eyes."

That day, Lily learned that things aren't always what they seem—and sometimes, the scariest-looking creatures make the best friends. Every weekend, she returned to dance with her new friends under the palm tree, sharing magical oranges and wonderful adventures.
