The Sphinx's Secret Friend
Lily loved playing spy in her garden. With her magnifying glass and notebook, she hunted for secrets among the flowers. But her best secret-keeping partner was Fin, her orange goldfish who lived in a bowl on her windowsill.
One sunny afternoon, something magical happened. As Lily peered through her spy glass, the garden hedge began to shimmer and shake. Out stepped a creature she had only seen in books—a golden sphinx with the body of a lion and the head of a wise woman.
"Greetings, little spy," the sphinx spoke in a voice like wind chimes. "I am Cleo, guardian of the Garden of Wonders. I have been watching you." Lily gasped. The sphinx smiled. "Do not be afraid. I need your help. I have forgotten my favorite riddle, and without it, I cannot protect this magical place."
Lily wanted to help, but she didn't know any riddles. She ran to her room and brought Fin outside in his bowl. "Fin knows everything about secrets," she told Cleo.
The sphinx laughed kindly. "A wise choice, little one. Sometimes the quietest friends know the most." Cleo looked at Fin, and suddenly the goldfish began to glow. Tiny bubbles floated up, forming words in the air:
*I have cities but no houses,
I have mountains but no trees,
I have water but no fish,
What am I?*
"A map!" Lily shouted. "It's a map!"
Cleo's eyes sparkled. "You have solved it! Friendship and curiosity make the best detectives." She touched Lily's forehead with a golden paw. "Now you can see magic wherever you go."
From that day on, Lily and Fin discovered magic everywhere—in dewdrops, in spiderwebs, in the stories clouds told. And every evening, the sphinx would wink from her hiding place in the hedge, reminding Lily that the best secrets are the ones we share with friends.
