The Sphinx's Secret Friend
Lily loved running through the meadow behind her house. Every afternoon after school, she would race the wind, her sneakers thumping against the soft grass while the sun painted everything golden.
One Tuesday, while running farther than usual, Lily discovered something impossible. Behind the old willow tree stood a sphinx, but not like the ones in her books. This sphinx had emerald-green fur instead of stone, and her eyes sparkled like tiny galaxies. She was the size of a golden retriever, with wings that shimmered like soap bubbles.
"You're fast!" the sphinx said, her voice sounding like wind chimes. "I'm Cleo. Will you be my friend?"
Lily's heart leaped. "Yes! But aren't sphinxes supposed to be scary and ask riddles?"
Cleo laughed. "Those are my cousins from Egypt. I'm different. I make friends, not riddles."
Every day that week, Lily visited Cleo. They played hide-and-seek among the wildflowers, and Cleo taught Lily how to speak squirrel (which mostly involves twitching your nose). But on Friday, something worried Cleo.
"My friend needs help," Cleo said sadly. "Everyone thinks he's scary, but he's the gentlest soul I know. Will you meet him?"
Lily nodded, though she felt nervous.
Cleo led her through the woods to a sunny clearing where a massive bull stood grazing. He was enormous, with horns that curved like crescent moons. But when he saw Cleo, his eyes softened.
"This is Barnaby," Cleo said. "He's my best friend."
Barnaby approached slowly and lowered his massive head. Lily held her breath as he nuzzled her hand with his velvet nose. He was warm and smelled of sunshine and clover.
"He's beautiful!" Lily whispered, scratching behind his ears. Barnaby sighed happily.
"People run away because they think bulls are angry," Cleo explained. "But Barnaby loves butterflies and gentle pats. He protects baby bunnies from foxes."
That afternoon, Lily learned something wonderful: sometimes the things that seem scary are actually the most loving, if we only give them a chance.
From then on, Lily, Cleo, and Barnaby had adventures together. They discovered that friendship has nothing to do with how someone looks—whether they have wings, horns, or just a really fast pair of sneakers.
And every evening, Lily would go running home with the most magical secret in the world tucked safely in her heart.
