The Sphinx's Secret Friend

Lily loved swimming in the magical lagoon behind her house. The water sparkled with tiny golden flecks that swirled around her fingers like underwater stars. One afternoon, while doing her favorite backstroke, she spotted something peculiar lurking near the weeping willow.

It looked like a zombie, but not the scary kind from movies. This creature had moss-green skin, flowers growing from its hair, and the kindest eyes Lily had ever seen. It was carefully tying message bottles to palm tree branches along the shore.

"Are you a spy?" Lily called out, swimming closer.

The zombie jumped, dropping a bottle into the water with a splash. "Oh goodness no! I'm Zola, the sphinx's gardener."

Lily's eyes widened. "You know the sphinx? The magical riddle creature who lives in the cave behind the waterfall?"

Zola nodded. "She's my best friend. But she's lonely because everyone's afraid of her riddles. I send these messages in bottles, hoping someone brave and clever will come visit."

The palm trees swayed in the breeze as if whispering encouragement. Lily swam to shore, her heart racing with excitement.

"I love riddles!" Lily said, squeezing water from her hair. "Will you take me to meet her?"

Zola's mossy face lit up with a smile. "Really? No one has ever wanted to before!"

Hand in hand—Lily's small hand in Zola's leafy one—they walked behind the waterfall. Inside the cave sat the most beautiful sphinx, with golden fur and amethyst eyes that shone like stars.

"I've been waiting for someone like you," the sphinx purred gently. "Zola told me you were coming. She saw it in the palm of her hand when she was planting moonflowers this morning."

"You can see the future?" Lily asked.

"The future shows itself to those with pure hearts," the sphinx replied. "Now, would you like to hear my favorite riddle?"

Lily nodded eagerly.

"What has no weight but can still break the heaviest heart?"

Lily thought carefully, remembering how sad her mom looked when her grandmother passed away.

"A promise that's broken," Lily whispered.

The sphinx beamed. "Correct! You're wiser than most adults."

From that day on, Lily visited her magical friends every day after school. She learned that true friendship isn't about how someone looks—it's about kindness, trust, and keeping your promises. The zombie gardener, the lonely sphinx, and the curious swimmer became the most unlikely but happiest trio in all the magical realm.
